Faculty Association officers' responsibilities are set out in the FA contract (which will eventually be posted in a section on this website).
Short descriptions:
President represents the FA before the public, presides over meetings, fills vacancies on standing committees (with FA executive board approval), and generally fills in the gaps as needed.
Vice-President serves in the president's absence, but primarily chairs the Grievance Committee, Exec. Brd. Nominations Committee: establishes committee membership, convenes as necessary, files grievances, meets with faculty and administrators, reports to the Exec. Brd and general membership as necessary.
Secretary takes minutes of association and executive board meetings and assists as needed with FA correspondence.
Treasurer keeps track of FA funds, dispersing them as directed by the executive board, and reports annually to the membership.
RA Delegates (2-yr. positions) attend two statewide MEA meetings and several MEA Region 12 meetings, representing the FA's interests there and reporting back to the board.
RA Alternates attend if RA cannot; do the same except they do not vote at the statewide meetings.
MAHE Representatives and alternates (one, at present) attend meetings of the Michigan Association of Higher Education, as well as MEA Region 12 meetings, and report back to the board.
At-large members (at present, two three-year, two two-year, and three one-year members) attend board meetings and help generally with activities of the FA. These include one newly appointed board member, the webmaster for this site.
Past president continues to serve on the board.
Meetings of the FA board are held Sept. through April on alternate Fridays, with additional meetings during spring and summer. A simple majority of the board is needed to conduct business. The vice-president, president, and 3-5 others from the board serve on the Association Committee for Grievances. Other committees are formed from time to time.
In winter term, a nominating committee is formed to nominate candidates for the FA board; nominations may also come from the floor. Subsequently, in April, an elections committee conducts the election of FA officers by secret ballot.
In addition to the FA board, there is a group of floor representatives, drawn from faculty in the several buildings on campus.
